New Year’s Eve is almost here. Whether you’re rockin’ n’ rollin’ in the new year at a party or a quiet gathering with your loved ones, be careful and above all – don’t drink & drive!

Every year people write up a list of New Year’s resolutions, changes they want to make and unfortunately better than 80% fail to do so. It’s one thing to put up positive changes you want to make in your life, it’s totally another to be committed to making those changes.

Matty’s research over the years found one thing to be true in almost all circumstances – a written, specific goal carries much more weight than a verbal generality.

Zig Ziglar was credited as saying, “Goals are dreams with a deadline.” Dan Miller over at 48 Days came up with a goal sheet that you can download for free. The goal sheet spans all aspects of life from financial to spiritual to relationships, & health. The goals are broken down to 5 year goals, 1 year goals, & goals for today. Dan suggests that we need to have our goals set for the New Year by October, not December 31st.

If Dan wins the lottery, good times are on the way for the crew! Matty shared a little about what to do if you win the lottery as found on this post.

We talked about the sad state of affairs where the mindset these days tends to be, “f-u, I got mine” and how we need to get back to helping each other to succeed.

We spoke a little about the mid-season finale of “The Walking Dead” and how the comic rules Kirkman came up with  still apply to the television show – “no one is safe”…

Matty shared an article stating that researchers have found that if you were attractive since high school, you’ve gotten a few more advantages and have become a little more successful in life because of it.

Here is that tragic documentary about the man who blew thousands of dollars on Beanie Babies as an investment.

And for Jen the Intern, here’s a little something special…

Until the New Year!

Well, kiddies, before there was the “internet” we would wait patiently for the mailman to bring us the Christmas catalogs from such retailers as Montgomery Wards, Sears, & JC Penney. Dubbed “wishbooks”, they were our reference material to compile our lists for Santa Claus to bring us. Yet another thing kids today are missing out on…

Here’s a website that has several scans of old catalogs – WishbookWeb

Matty has compiled a pretty decent playlist of Christmas songs for you to bop along to at work, home, or on the road (if you have Spotify Premium!) – Christmas Tunes

Talking about Christmas music, Matty says there are a few that gets him choked up. As of late it has been the comedian Rodney Carrington’s rendition of “Camouflage & Christmas Lights“, about our military men & women who cannot be home with their families at Christmas… Dan’s of course is “Fairy Tale of New York” by The Pogues, we shared links to a documentary on last week’s blogpost.

There has always been that “white whale” Christmas gift that you pined for and never received as a kid. For Matty it was a ColecoVision console that could play not only Coleco cartridges but also its rival’s (the Atari 2600) carts as well. The graphics were FAR superior and were only eclipsed when the Nintendo NES was released years later.

Dan’s elusive gift was either the Death Star playset or the USS Flagg playset

Jen the Intern says hers was the Barbie Dream House

Matty highly recommends checking out the book, “A Redbird Christmas: A Novel” by Fannie Flagg (the author of “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café“). It’s an annual Christmas read for him, a touching & humorous story…

Next week will be the last podcast until the new year! Be sure to tune in and find out what the gang’s resolutions will be!

Uncle Kev – (warning, a little rough language)

This entire episode is dedicated to Kevin Smith. He has been an inspiration to Matty, an encouragement to go out and create and not look back. Kevin has become a mogul in his own right, not only is he a talented director he is also an actor, writer, public speaker, & avid podcaster. Coming from humble beginnings, he has created an empire and a tribe that has exploded in recent years.

Matty recommends reading Kevin’s book, “Tough Sh*t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good“. Amid the puerile humor is actually some good advice that anyone can apply to their lives.

Mr. Smith’s claim to fame started with a low-budget opus entitled, “Clerks” and has since snow-balled into a juggernaut of a multimedia empire.

Here are some of the classic videos discussed:

“Wild Thing” by Sam Kinison

“Here I Go Again” by White Snake

“The Bum-Bum Song (Lonely Swedish)” by Tom Green (the TRL breaker)

And don’t forget your homework for this week:

“The Fairytale of New York – A Documentary”
