When it was initially released in 1994, “The Stoned Age” was panned as a knock-off of the previous year’s sleeper hit “Dazed and Confused”. But I think they got it wrong. Although the movies take place in or about the same era (the mid-to-late 1970’s), each has their own identity. “Dazed and Confused” followed the more “popular” kids on the last day of school, the shenanigans, the partying, the drama. “The Stoned Age” had a different premise probably more in line with the movie “American Graffiti” than with “Dazed and Confused”.
Joe & Hubbs are a couple of long-haired loners that like Blue Oyster Cult, drinking “tall cans”, & cruising around Torrance, CA looking for something to do. When one of their buddies tell them about a couple of chicks who were going to a party near Frankie Avalon’s place, they pile into the “blue torpedo” on a wild night of adventure.
There are a few known actors (Taylor Negron, Jake Busey, & an uncredited Danny McBride!) and of course Frankie Avalon had to be in it since the pair’s quest take them to his place.
Don’t go into it with pre-conceived notions that this is a “Dazed and Confused” wannabe and you will be pleasantly surprised…
