When “Star Wars” hit theaters in 1977 (and again in 1978), the popularity was off the charts at the time. Many studios around the world scrambled to get a piece of the action by creating their own “space operas” that oftentimes blatantly stole from the “Star Wars” franchise. All this month we will look at some of them, keeping in mind that they are meant to rip off “Star Wars” and do so poorly…
“Starcrash” came out in 1978, and actually has some fairly well-known stars. Marjoe Gortner was best known as a child evangelist and the center of his own documentary, “Marjoe”. David Hasselhoff (yes, THAT David Hasselhoff!) stars alongside Caroline Munro (who’s best known for portraying Victoria Phibes in the “Dr. Phibes” series of horror films starring Vincent Price), and Christopher Plummer as “The Emperor”.
From the long single shots of a poorly-constructed “imperial cruiser” to the now famous “Star Wars paragraph crawl”, the ripoffs are plentiful. It even got a sequel in 1981, shortly after “Empire Strikes Back”.
