This month’s “Sunday Cinema” theme is Amusement Parks! Summer is always equated with throngs of hot & sweaty families waiting in long lines for rides while stuffing their gobs with turkey legs & overpriced hot dogs.
“Rollercoaster” could swear you off amusement parks for life, if you lived back in 1977. One of a handful of movies shown in “Sensurround” (basically 4 large bass speakers were placed around the theater to intensify the “rumble” of the rollercoasters), it had some well-known actors (and some up-and-coming actors as well). Timothy Bottoms (best known as GW Bush on “That’s My Bush!“) stars as a serial bomber targeting amusement parks across the country by blowing the tracks & causing accidents on their popular rollercoasters. George Segal (the granddad on “The Goldbergs“) plays a ride safety inspector forced to play the deadly game of “Where will the bomber strike next?”. Henry Fonda, Helen Hunt, & an uncredited Steve Guttenberg also end up in the cast of characters.
Even after being toned-down to receive an “R” rating, some of the imagery is disturbing. Someone posted a copy that looks like it was filmed in a movie theater…
