Sunday Cinema – “The Monster of Piedras Blancas”

Piedras

July is usually a “tent pole” month for movie studios. Many blockbusters are released in the middle of summer to cash in on the lucrative Fourth of July holiday. This month we decided to share some “mockbusters”, films that are often blatant rip-offs of real blockbuster movies to cash in on their popularity.

Probably one of the earliest versions of a “mockbuster”, this film is a rip-off of the popular Universal Pictures horror that was “The Creature from the Black Lagoon”. The titles are similar (“Piedras Blancas” roughly translates to “White Stones” or “White Pebbles”) as well as the look/origin of the monsters as well (both are humanoid “gill men” with similar features) due to the fact that the designer had designed suits for both movies.

A lowly lighthouse keeper trying to keep his teen daughter safe, offers food to a mysterious creature that lives in a cave along the shore. Locals think him crazy until bodies begin to appear on the beach, ravaged by something non-human…

Someone posted the entire schlock-fest online for all to enjoy…

With the Disneyworld area unleashed and the promise of 2 more sequels, how best can you capitalize on a film when you don’t own the film property? Mash a part of the film’s premise together with another big franchise and you get this turd. 6 college students are stuck in the middle of an intergalactic war between 2 races of aliens, one race that can shape-shift into anything using the DNA it consumes…

Pandering to the Masses

Pandering to the Masses

The office building where MattyV works will be demolished and replaced with an 8-screen movie theater with dine-in service. These are becoming more and more common as theater owners try to get people into the theater seats while competing with internet streaming & other distractions. Thrillist has an article from 2013 on cool dine-in movie theaters across the country…

Dan the Man’s obsession with Burger King’s “2 for $5” Italian chicken sandwich deal

MattyV is a Kubrick fan, Dan the Man is a mini-series fan when it comes to “The Shining”. Oh, and it’s Mr. Halloran the boys couldn’t remember the name of.

If Chins Could Kill – Confessions of a B-Movie Actor” by Bruce Campbell is a pretty good Audible book. Read by the author, Bruce’s dulcet tones are dreamy…

Is “Seven” a good baby’s name? George Costanza thinks so

Out for a Sip?”, well Coca-Cola is in trouble with a Canadian rapper that trademarked that phrase. Interesting to see how they respond….

As far as making YouTube money, it’s possible if you have the content to attract an audience and keep them. Chandler Dickinson, James Townsend, & Rob Scallon do well with attracting & maintaining their audiences.

What do you get when you mix “Revenge of the Nerds”, “Spring Breakers”, & “American Pie”? You get this raunchy T&A fest starring Lewis Skolnic himself. A take on the film starring James Franco & Selena Gomez, check the YouTube comments for time markers where nudity can be gawked at…

Spidey Sense

Spidey Sense

This week the boys checked out “Spiderman:Homecoming” at the theater, so if you don’t want things spoiled – DON’T LISTEN until after you’ve seen it!

Nerdist has been a great resource for the movie, sharing possible MCU spoilers, looking at the science of Spiderman’s wall-crawling, & whether or not there will be a Spiderman/Venom cross-over movie.

Hearken back 2 years when we mentioned the cheesy Turkish rip-off of Spiderman (“3 Dev Adam” in our Sunday Cinema ‘Turkish Star Wars” blog entry.

Us Gen-Xers remember the 1977-1978 CBS television series, “The Amazing Spiderman“, starring Nicholas Hammond as the webbed wonder. Or maybe the old Electric Company skits on PBS.

Jennifer Connolly (who voices “Karen”, Peter’s suit AI) shows some titties along with Virginia Madsen in “The Hot Spot“.

John Francis Daley co-wrote the script, you might remember him as Sam from “Freaks & Geeks“.

Aladdin’s Castle was THE place to be in any mall. NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat, & Street Fighter ruled the day…

SNES Classic is going to contain Star Fox 2, an unreleased SNES title. Hopefully they will have enough in production to meet demand…

Sega is releasing their catalog of games on both Android & iOS, free-to-play with ads or you can pay to have the ads removed…

One of the more recent actors to wear the Spidey suit, Andrew Garfield, is in a bit of trouble when he said upon researching his role as a gay man that he was essentially gay without the physical act.

MattyV has been late to the party, he JUST nicely finished “Rick and Morty“…

Technically, there are a total of 8 Infinity Gems. The original six are a part of the MCU…

“The Little Panda Fighter” is a rip-off of the Dreamworks/Jack Black franchise that has become popular in the last few years. Pancada works at a boxing club but secretly wants to become a dancer. He is forced to fight thanks to a mistaken identity. I mean it when I say to watch at your own risk…

Sunday Cinema – What’s UP!

What's Up

This month we decided to share some “mockbusters”, films that are often blatant rip-offs of real blockbuster movies to cash in on their popularity.

An obvious take on the popular (yet sad) movie from Disney, this 45-minute computer animated feature utilizes only the name & the concept of a balloon-floating house from the original – the professor & some kids battling aliens is the difference…
