November is the month for Veterans, Thanksgiving, & shopping (enough with the “Christmas creep”!). All this month on Sunday Cinema we will be looking at odd movies that either take place during Thanksgiving or the holiday is the focus.

This short film follows a family as they learn more about Thanksgiving than just turkeys & pumpkin pie. Too often today we neglect the real meaning of the holiday, a time to fellowship with family & friends and being thankful for the many blessings we have received.

“Thankskilling” introduced us to “Turkie” the homocidal turkey hell-bent on killing “the white man”. ‘Thankskilling 3″ finds us watching the crazy turkey hunt down the very last copy of “Thankskilling 2” being held by a bunch of puppets, a weird wig-wearing inventor, & some really strange sh*t. Budgeted by a Kickstarter campaign, it took 50 days to complete filming whereas the original took less than 2 weeks.

Rocky Horror (Among Other Things)

The boys went to see “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” experience at The Park Theater on the Friday before Halloween. I was a “virgin” to the experience of participation in a theater, DEFINITELY DO NOT let anyone around you know. There are reports of theater-goers pulling “virgins” up front and spank them or write a V on their forehead and force them to sing a jingle.

Back in 1981, with the success of movies centered around specific days (“Halloween”, “Friday the 13th”, “New Year’s Evil”) someone decided to make a Thanksgiving horror movie and called it “Home Sweet Home”.

An escaped mental patient who shoots PCP into his tongue(!), hijacks a station wagon & travels to a remote residence where the Bradley family is getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving. Not over-the-top with gore or nudity (apparently the director missed MANY opportunities to do so), it’s a rather reserved slasher film. Stars such as Jake Steinfeld (“Body by Jake”) & Vinessa Shaw (“Hocus Pocus”, “Eyes Wide Shut”), it’s an odd and dated thriller for sure…
