Sunday Cinema – “Party Camp”

In a rush to get those sweet, sweet teen dollars this b-movie gem hit theaters in June of 1987. Consider it a mixture of “Meatballs” and “Ferris Beuller’s Day Off”, Jerry is sent to be a summer camp counselor and meets the woman of his dreams. Unfortunately the camp he is at is military-strict, so it takes him and a cadre of misfit campers to turn the summer camp into an every day party.

Going so far as to use a similar font to the “Meatballs” movie poster, “Party Camp” tries hard to mimic it. Add in some b-movie stars that don’t mind a little nudity, “Freddy Lippencottleman” from the popular television show “Silver Spoons” and Billy Jayne (the staple of teen movies of the 1980’s) and you have “Party Camp”.

Someone across the pond posted a fairly clean copy of this romp for all to enjoy…

Sunday Cinema – “Hot Moves”

One of a slew of “lose your virginity” comedies of the 1980’s, “Hot Moves” finds 4 friends on a mission to lose their virginity before their senior year of high school and all the hijinx that follow them. A few notables, Roger Rose (former VH-1 VJ & accomplished voice actor), Jill Schoelen (“Popcorn”), & Tammi Holbrook (the voice of Tommy Pickles on Nickelodeon’s “Rugrats”), but really this is about crude humor and T&A…

Sunday Cinema – “Mac and Me”

Back in the 1980’s, before instant streaming, movies were often “bootlegged” and released to cash in on already profitable movie property. “Mac and Me” was a movie loosely based on the premise of “E.T.” and had a bigger budget than most knock-off films. Filled with product placements from entities such as McDonald’s, Skittles, & Coca Cola, the budget of $13 million for the 1980’s was pretty significant.

NASA sends a probe to an alien planet and it “gathers” (read “sucks up”) a family of aliens and brings them back to Earth. Mac (Mysterious Alien Creature) gets separated from his family and finds protection from a boy in a wheelchair. There are a lot of similarities between this film and “E.T.” for sure, down to the characters names. Didn’t do well at the box office, accumulating less than half of its budget.

Sunday Cinema – “Hot Resort”

The 1980’s were filled with all sorts of teen sex comedies, from “Porky’s” to “Meatballs” – crude humor and some nudity is all it takes.

“Hot Resort” is about a group of guys flying out to a Caribbean resort to work for the summer. While there, they chase women and have some goofy adventures. A couple of stars to note, Bronson Pinchot (“Perfect Strangers”), Dan Schneider (creator of a ton of Nickelodeon tween/teen shows such as “Good Burger”, “All That”, & “I-Carly”), and “The Riddler” himself – Frank Gorshin!

Standing Room Only

The thing is, the attraction itself was not damaged. Apparently it could have operated, but since the access road to get there was covered in a landslide. Not knowing how the policy reads, either landslide/mudslide was excluded or since what was being insured was not damaged – the claim was rightfully denied.

Sunday Cinema – “Aloha Summer”

About the time “Dirty Dancing” came out, a lot of other studios jumped on the nostalgia bandwagon to cash in. Films like “Shag – The Movie” & “Aloha Summer” tried to capture the same nostalgia, but wasn’t able to capture the dollars that “Dirty Dancing” had (“Aloha Summer” grossed less than $500k).

1959, the year Hawaii became a state. A group of teens from different walks of life get together and have adventures during their summer holiday. There are a few stars, a young Tia Carrere (before “Wayne’s World”) & Chris Makepeace (“Meatballs” & “My Bodyguard”) among others.
