The Last Precinct

Quirky 1980’s television shows is the theme for “Sunday Cinema” this month. These shows lasted less than a season due to poor ratings, some concepts probably would have done better today and would have become longer series…
Another excuse by a network to cash-in on a popular movie franchise, The Last Precinct was essentially a television version of the Police Academy movies. The LAPD decided to drop all of their misfit officers into one precinct. There’s the Elvis-impersonator cop, the transvestite cop, the gay-ethnic cop, the fat bumbling mess of a cop, and of course there’s Adam West (of Batman fame) as the commanding officer. Rick Ducommon, Ernie Hudson, & Randi Brooks are all a part of this weird show. It was canceled after 7 episodes…
Someone found this gem on an old VHS tape and uploaded it for posterity…

Bennu of the Golden Light had awoken in Peru by some archaeologists who inadvertently destroyed his mission information. Left to survive on earth, he does his best to avoid authorities who want to worship & study him while searching for his long lost love who arrived on the planet 40,000 earlier.
Cut short at 4 episodes, this premise was way ahead of its time and probably would have found a home with a streaming service today.
Someone posted the extended pilot online for all to enjoy…

The Original Max Talking Headroom Show

Quirky 1980’s television shows is the theme for “Sunday Cinema” this month. These shows lasted less than a season due to poor ratings, some concepts probably would have done better today and would have become longer series…
What first started out as a character in a British television movie, “Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future” blossomed into a 2 season television show followed by a Christmas special and a late-night talk show on Cinemax.
Basically a satire of then-current late-night talk shows, Max’s biting commentary & oddball guests coupled with strange skits made the show a bit ahead of its time and it was canceled after 6 episodes.
Someone posted the first episode online for all to wonder in all its 1980’s glory…
