One of the films riding the “Platoon” wave of Vietnam-era war movies of the late-1980’s, “Platoon Leader” seems to hold its own rather than being a poor man’s version of Oliver Stone’s riveting film. Directed by Aaron Norris (Chuck Norris’ brother) and starring Michael Dudikoff (of the “American Ninja” series of films), “Platoon Leader” follows a naive West Point graduate as he takes his first command post in Vietnam. He is injured but later returns a hardened leader respected by both his men & his superiors.

Taking liberties from films such as “Rambo part II” & “Missing in Action”, “P.O.W. the Escape” stars David Carradine (of “Kung Fu” & “Kill Bill” fame) as a soldier tasked with rescuing a group of American POWs secreted away at a camp deep within Vietnam that doesn’t “exist” shortly before the fall of Saigon. With reviews claiming it to be a vehicle written for Chuck Norris (and starring one of his sidekicks) & disbelief that it actually made it into theaters, a film you have to see because it is so bad & over the top…

MattyV got exposed heavily to R&B music at a young age thanks to a 90min recording of a Chicago-based radio station while visiting with his family. “Always and Forever” was the music for the first dance at his wedding.

“Because You Loved Me” is a huge song in MattyV’s household. His wife is a HUGE Celine Dion fan & for their anniversary in 1998 he took her to see Celine at the Palace at Auburn Hills (RIP)…

A rogue group of American soldiers are being transported through France on their way to a military prison. The convoy is ambushed by the Germans, they escape with plans to make it to the Swiss border. Along the way they capture a German prisoner who offers to guide them there. Killing what was thought to be a German platoon, they soon discover that it was an American commando unit sent in to capture a V2 warhead from the Germans. The group offers to risk their lives in order to complete the mission.

In the same vein as “The Dirty Dozen”, “Kelly’s Heroes”, & “The Wild Geese”, the film is a classic with many unforgettable lines. The film was later remade by Quentin Tarantino changing the title to “Inglorious Basterds” as not to take away from the original.

Mt. Rushmore of Comedy

George Carlin should be in the top 5 of comedians of all time. His jokes & comedic style looked at society and made us really look at ourselves. His most-famous bit had to do with the 7 words you can’t say on the radio (and later, television). Even though these words can now be heard on late-night television, the bit is still funny today…

Jerry Clower is a “good ole boy” from Missouri, originally a fertilizer salesman who told stories to sell fertilizer. Someone suggested he record his stories and sell them. He did and ended up with a record contract with RCA Records. He’s not vulgar, he’s not “blue”, he just tells tall tales about his family and friends. This story about the Ledbetter family’s fire extinguishing skills is hilarious…

Richard Pryor was a breakthrough comedian/actor/writer. He co-wrote “Blazing Saddles” with Mel Brooks, starred in many “fish out of water” movies, but his onstage comedy is where he shone best. Profanity-laced, he tells the story of how he set himself on fire while “freebasing” (smoking crack)...

Redd Foxx in his early career was a “blue” comedian, his albums would come out at adult parties where he would tell sexual innuendo jokes, racist jokes, & such but never profanity. As his career progressed to television & film, his onstage act began to get filthier unfortunately. Here’s a classic, “Makin’ Sandwiches“…

Robin Williams did stand-up, guest starred on sit-coms, then moved on to movies from goofy comedies to serious fare. Check out “Moscow on the Hudson” sometime (have no idea why Pluto TV doesn’t have subtitles for the Russia portion of the movie…)

Rodney Dangerfield started his comedic career late but is well-known for his self-deprecating humor. He had a storied movie career, a rap album, & opened his own comedy club (at which scenes from the recent hit movie, “Joker” were filmed).

Bob Hope was a surprising choice from Dan the Man, his “road” movies were great & his annual USO shows for the troops were classics people tuned into each Christmas…

Christmas 1944 finds American POWs at Stalag 17 dealing with a security leak within their ranks. One POW has been fingered as the culprit, but is it really him?

The movie was directed & written by the great Billy Wilder and starred many a-list celebrities at the time. The setting & premise of the movie was used in the development of the television series, “Hogan’s Heroes” with Bob Crane taking on a role similar to the character Sefton in the film.
