Sunday Cinema – “Christmas in Appalachia”

appalachia

CBS News did a special report back in 1965 with Charles Kuralt (of “On The Road…” fame) all about the depressing conditions people in the Appalachian mountains. As sad as this was in 1965, it is still a reality today.

When you complain  about not getting the right iPhone or gadget this Christmas, watch this special and think about giving to a local charity to help someone else have a good Christmas.

Some one was kind enough to preserve this history on YouTube

Rogue One – Spoilers Ahead

Rogue One – Spoilers Ahead

Well, Matty wanted this to be a spoiler-free review of “Rogue One”. But he couldn’t contain himself after seeing it. So, if you haven’t seen the movie – DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST EPISODE!

Taking his young son to see the film reminded Matty of his own venture to see “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Nerdist broke down all of the Easter eggs & references to other movies in the SW universe, did they miss any?

Nerdist also took a look at the re-shoots with “Rogue One”, which show some different character arcs than what the original shoots wanted to portray.

DIY PropShop has a tutorial on how to make your own light saber. I like how the instructor explains a few times that every light saber is different based on the wielder, so you can make it your own.

The folks at Tested got their hands on an Anovos replica “Rogue One” Death Trooper helmet. This is a screen-accurate piece molded from original molds and approved by the franchise.

IGN revealed that one of the coolest things about “Rogue One” was that they incorporated unused footage from “A New Hope” in the characters of Red Leader & Gold Leader. Finding some unused footage of the original Death Star assault, both actors got time in the spotlight once more.

Not totally sure that this is kosher, but “Rogue One” hit $290 million world-wide in their opening weekend – which technically occurred on a Thursday. We question it because the original trilogy’s opening weekend figures are based on one less day at the box office. Dan the Man & MattyV remember when movies opened on a Friday and a television show’s season was 22 episodes with no mid-season breaks (except for holidays, then re-runs!). Yea, get off our lawn!

Sunday Cinema – “He-Man & She-Ra – A Christmas Special”

heman

Yes, even in Eternia there is Christmas, or an approximation as such. The whole cast of characters from both the He-Man & She-Ra toy lines found their way into this 45 minute toy commercial.

Orko gets transported to Earth during the test of a spy satellite. He makes it back to Eternia with 2 children in tow. Since it is Christmas on Earth, the kids are filled with holiday spirit that catches on in Eternia. Horde Prime & Skeletor don’t like it and will stop at nothing to quash it.

Apparently this is an “official” release on YouTube according to the user. Merry Christmas!

Sunday Cinema – “The Town Santa Forgot”

Jeremy Creek is a spoiled little boy who wails and wails until he gets what he wants. He sent a letter to Santa asking for an inordinate amount of gifts. Santa misdelivers his gifts to a town with the same name as Jeremy. It’s then that he learns that it is better to give than to receive.

A pretty stellar cast of voices including Dick Van Dyke, Miko Hughes (“Pet Sematary”), Ashley Johnson (“Growing Pains”), & even Paul Williams (“Smokey & The Bandit”)!

Someone took a VHS TV recording and posted it online for all to learn from!

Matty took his son to see a special advanced screening of “Sing”, the new Dreamworks movie that is set to release on 12/21/2016. Dan the man had a similar opportunity back in 1995 and ended up being able to see “Heat” with Robert DeNiro for free.

Yes, drinking excessive energy drinks will give you hepatitis and destroy your liver

Dan the Man & MattyV are trying to make conscious efforts to lose weight & this week instead of going out somewhere, they picked up some Burger King kids’ meals. For the record, the boys ate 1/2 the burger & half the fries, saving the cookie for later…

Mayans MC” has been ordered by FX as a spinoff series to their hit, “Sons of Anarchy”…

Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugar Hill Gang was the first hip-hop single to be released in September 1979, “Christmas Rappin’” by Kurtis Blow was the second hip-hop single to be released in December 1979 and went on open the door to hip-hop in the mainstream…

I’m sure it happens at a lot of churches, but they’re more “strongly suggested” rather than actually put down on paper

How would you like it if the government all of a sudden declared our current currency as being valueless? People in India are in outrage over this very thing, especially those who are poor.

Hatchimals & the NES Classic are the “must have” toys for Christmas this year…

Fans of Hunter S. Thompson are going to get a thrill, his wife is helping to commercially-develop the 6 strains of marijuana that Hunter enjoyed. Instead of just slapping his name & visage on just any old cannabis, he will be immortalized on the strains he had personal connection with…

This is why you both don’t do crack & leave valuable collections unattended. A 53 year old man put his father’s $8,000 coin collection through a Coinstar machine to get money from crack cocaine.

There is something wrong with the ability to purchase a do-it-yourself automatic rifle kit that comes with no serial numbers or manufacturer stamps

Maybe back in the day that would have been a good scam, but today with security cameras all over it would be a might more difficult to pull off…

Now, I’m sure the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos will burn your mouth & bunghole. But trying to use them as an accelerant in an arson fire, that’s a stretch…

Sunday Cinema – “Rich Little’s A Christmas Carol”

rich

Rich Little did well over the years as an impersonator, well-known for his impressions of W.C. Fields & Richard Nixon. In 1978, HBO released “Rich Little’s A Christmas Carol” where Rich plays each part of the Dickens’ tale in a different impersonated celebrity. With W.C. Fields as Scrooge, Paul Lynde as Bob Crachit, & even Edith Bunker as Mrs. Crachit.

Someone posted the entire special on YouTube in several parts, the coolest is the first part that shows several HBO commercials before the feature!:
