Finland tried a 2-year experiment to give 2,000 citizens from all stations in life $640/mo for basic necessities to see how this would impact their livelihood. The program ended on 12/31/2018 and just about all the participants are pissed that it did not continue and now seem to be in worse shape than before financially…

Sunday Cinema – “Strictly Personal”

For the month of March we will be looking at “military” themed movies since March contains the military’s favorite day – “March 4th”. Some old, some new, some obscure, some just plain weird.

The armed forces has always had codes and guidelines as far as dress/hygiene/safety and the best way to get that info across is through training films! This particular film has to do with female recruits and keeping up their appearance while still being “military”.

The NIH (National Institute for Health) posted this film along with other training films online for all to witness.

Sunday Cinema “I Was a Male War Bride”

For the month of March we will be looking at “military” themed movies since March contains the military’s favorite day – “March 4th”. Some old, some new, some obscure, some just plain weird.

Cary Grant stars as a French Captain (!) who marries a American female who happens to be a Lieutenant in the army. When the work in Europe is complete he tries to get into the US with her under the War Brides Act of 1945, which stipulated foreign wives of military personnel could return to the states with their spouse. Filled with all sorts of gender-confusing antics and Ann Sheridan, it’s a funny film.

Interestingly, the owner of the movie posted it online for people to enjoy for free!

Sunday Cinema – “This is the Army”

For the month of March we will be looking at “military” themed movies since March contains the military’s favorite day – “March 4th”. Some old, some new, some obscure, some just plain weird.

In WWI, a singer/dancer is drafted into the US Army where he performs a stage revue with fellow soldiers. One night, the soldiers are given their marching orders and have to leave the show immediately. Wounded in France, Jerry Jones comes home with his dreams of dancing again dashed. Years later, his son (played by Lt. Ronald Reagan!) joins the Army shortly after Pearl Harbor and has the reluctant task of putting together a musical show like his father had years before. This time, the show goes on tour across the country eventually playing for the President of the United States. Johnny Jones and the rest of the cast are ordered back to their combat units…

This was basically a propaganda film paid for by “Uncle Sam” and stars not only the future Governor of California/President of the United States (Ronald Reagan), but also a future California Senator (George Murphy).

Someone posted this bit of historic nostalgia online for others to enjoy!

Tap Dancing on a Landmine, pt 2

Tap Dancing on a Landmine, pt 2

We’re living in an era where persons are guilty until proven innocent (and even then still ostracized), persons making false claims are often not punished, & persons are afraid to share their own personal opinions because of reprisal (sometimes violently).

The print & network media outlets by and large have been caught up in a rush to give news coverage without checking sources & often using social media as their reference material.

Minorities are afraid. Men are afraid. Women are afraid. Teens are afraid. Christians are afraid. We have created a toxic culture of commentary such as “F*ck you, where’s mine?” and “F*ck you and your opinions if your’s don’t align with mine.”

We have become a society of “shoot first, ask questions later. If those questions are too hard to answer, deflect blame elsewhere…”

This week we conclude our conversation involving hate crimes, the current political climate, and the mentality of our country. It’s a hard conversation to have, but we need to talk about things in the hopes of understanding rather than be silent.

Sunday Cinema – “Jungle Warriors”

For the month of March we will be looking at “military” themed movies since March contains the military’s favorite day – “March 4th”. Some old, some new, some obscure, some just plain weird.

“Jungle Warriors” follows a fashion photographer looking for a proper spot to capture his models in the jungle. Their helicopter is shot down and the survivors are captured by a drug lord’s private army. Hilarity ensues?

A cheap straight-to-VHS movie trying to cash in on the “Rambo”/”Commando”/”Missing in Action” fever that captured the box office, it stars some pretty interesting people. Sybil Danning (well-known for her T&A straight-to-video releases), Marjoe Gortner (former child evangelist/huckster that became a b-movie actor), John Vernon (Dean Wormer from “Animal House”, and Dana Elcar (from “Macguyver”).

A poorly ripped-from-VHS German copy that is apparently the uncut version not available on DVD, it contains German subtitles. Someone posted it online along with a link showing the differences between the cut/uncut versions for others to watch in awe…
